Are You Following Jesus or Following a Religious Institution?

Matthew 16:24; John 14:6; Colossians 2:8; Galatians 1:10

There is a question every believer must honestly answer: Are you following Jesus Christ, or are you simply following a religious institution?

Many people attend church every Sunday. They know their denomination, understand their church traditions, follow their pastors, and defend their religious beliefs. Yet, some have never taken the time to examine whether their lives truly reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Following a church is not the same as following Jesus. Attending religious gatherings does not automatically mean you are walking with the Lord.

Jesus did not call people to become loyal to religious organisations. He called them to follow Him.

In Matthew 16:24 (NIV), Jesus said:

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

Notice what Jesus said. He did not say, “Take up your church’s traditions and follow your denomination.” He said, “Follow me.”

Your relationship with Jesus must be greater than your attachment to any religious institution.

Religious Membership Does Not Guarantee Spiritual Growth

You can be a member of a church for thirty years and still lack spiritual maturity. You can know every church programme, sing every familiar song, and participate in every activity without becoming more obedient to Christ.

Spiritual growth comes through knowing Christ, obeying His Word, and allowing His teachings to shape your character.

Jesus rebuked religious leaders who honoured God with their lips while their hearts remained far from Him (Matthew 15:8).

God is not impressed by religious activities when your heart is not surrendered to Him.

Never Allow Church Traditions to Replace God’s Word

Some people defend their church traditions more passionately than they defend the truth of Scripture. They will reject a biblical teaching simply because their denomination does not accept it.

This is dangerous.

In Mark 7:8, Jesus rebuked people for letting go of God’s commands and holding on to human traditions.

Traditions are not automatically wrong. Church organisations are not automatically wrong. Pastors, leaders, and fellow believers have important roles in the body of Christ. However, none of them must take the place of God’s Word.

Your loyalty to an institution must never become greater than your obedience to Christ.

Follow Christ, Not Human Personalities

Some believers follow their pastors so closely that they accept everything they say without examining Scripture. They defend their leaders even when their actions contradict the Word of God.

But Paul gave believers an important instruction in 1 Corinthians 11:1:

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”

This is the standard of spiritual leadership. A leader deserves to be followed as he follows Christ.

Never surrender your spiritual understanding to another human being. Study the Scriptures. Test teachings. Examine what you hear.

Even the Bereans examined the Scriptures daily to see whether Paul’s message was true (Acts 17:11).

If the Bereans examined Paul’s teachings, you should also examine the teachings you receive today.

Your Identity Is in Christ, Not Your Denomination

You are not defined by the name written on your church building. You are defined by your relationship with Jesus Christ.

Your denomination cannot save you. Your church membership cannot cleanse your sins. Your pastor cannot take the place of Jesus in your life.

Jesus said in John 14:6:

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Salvation is found in Christ. Your confidence must rest in Him, not in the religious organisation you belong to.

Be Faithful to Christ Above Everything Else

Do not become so attached to a church that you lose your commitment to truth. Do not defend wrongdoing because it comes from your religious organisation. Do not reject correction because it challenges what you have always believed.

A true follower of Jesus must be willing to obey Him even when doing so challenges established traditions.

Remember, the purpose of gathering as believers is to worship God, learn His Word, encourage one another, and grow into maturity in Christ. The church should help you follow Jesus, not become a substitute for Him.

A QUESTION FOR YOUR HEART

If tomorrow your church building closed, your denomination changed its name, and your favourite pastor left the ministry, would you still follow Jesus?

If your answer is yes, then let your daily life demonstrate it.

Do not become a prisoner of religious systems. Become a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ.

The greatest question is not, “Which church do you belong to?” The greatest question is, “Are you truly following Jesus?”

Follow the Church as it points you to Christ, but never follow the Church when it leads you away from Him.
