God Is Bigger Than the Obstacles

Introduction

Life is filled with obstacles. Some appear as towering mountains, others as raging storms, and still others as closed doors that leave us feeling helpless. As believers, we often face trials that test our faith, but the truth we must hold on to is this: God is bigger than every obstacle.

The Scripture declares:

“For with God nothing shall be impossible.” – Luke 1:37

This truth should anchor our hearts. No matter how great the challenge, our God is greater. Let us take a journey through Scripture to see how God has always shown His power over obstacles and how we, too, can live in victory through Him.

1. God’s Power is Greater Than Human Limitation

Many times, the greatest obstacle is our own weakness. We feel inadequate, unqualified, or powerless. Yet God delights in working through our limitations.

When God called Moses, he protested:

“O my Lord, I am not eloquent… but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.” – Exodus 4:10

But God replied:

“Who hath made man’s mouth? … Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.” – Exodus 4:11–12

Moses saw an obstacle in himself, but God reminded him that His power was greater than any weakness. The same is true for us today. Paul also wrote:

“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9

The obstacle of our limitation is no match for the unlimited power of God.

2. God is Greater Than the Enemy

Believers face real opposition. Sometimes the enemy rises like Goliath—loud, intimidating, and seemingly undefeatable. Yet David, a young shepherd boy, knew that God was bigger than the giant before him.

David declared with bold faith:

“Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.” – 1 Samuel 17:45

The obstacle of Goliath was silenced by one stone directed by the hand of God. This teaches us that no weapon of the enemy can prevail against a believer who trusts in the Lord.

The Word assures us:

“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn.” – Isaiah 54:17

Whatever giant you face, remember—God is bigger.

3. God is Greater Than Circumstances

Sometimes the obstacle is not an enemy or our weakness but the circumstances around us. The Israelites faced such a situation when they stood before the Red Sea, with Pharaoh’s army pursuing behind them. It seemed impossible. Yet God showed that He is not limited by natural circumstances.

“And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.” – Exodus 14:21

What looked like a dead end became a pathway of deliverance. In the same way, God can turn your impossibilities into testimonies.

Remember the words of Jeremiah:

“Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee.” – Jeremiah 32:17

No matter what circumstances surround you, God remains greater.

4. God Is Greater Than Fear

Fear is one of the greatest obstacles believers face. Fear paralyzes faith and magnifies problems. But God has not given us the spirit of fear.

Paul reminds us:

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” – 2 Timothy 1:7

When Joshua was about to lead Israel into the Promised Land, he faced overwhelming fear and uncertainty. But God spoke to him:

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” – Joshua 1:9

Fear may rise, but God’s presence is greater than fear. Faith in His Word drives fear away.

5. God Is Greater Than Lack and Need

Sometimes obstacles appear in the form of lack—lack of resources, lack of strength, or lack of opportunities. But God is not limited by scarcity.

When thousands followed Jesus in the wilderness, there was no food. The disciples saw lack as the obstacle. But Jesus saw an opportunity for God’s greatness.

“And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.” – Matthew 14:20

What was insufficient became abundant when placed in God’s hands. The Word assures us:

“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19

Lack is never the final word. God’s provision is bigger.

6. God is Greater Than Death Itself

The greatest obstacle humanity faces is death. Yet even death could not hold back the power of God.

Jesus declared:

“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” – John 11:25

When Lazarus had been dead four days, hope was gone. But Jesus called him out of the tomb, proving that even the grave is no obstacle to God.

Paul boldly proclaimed:

“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” – 1 Corinthians 15:55

Even in the face of death, we have victory because our God is bigger.

7. How Believers Should Respond to Obstacles

Knowing that God is greater should inspire us to live with unshakable faith. Here are key responses:

  1. Trust in God’s Promises – Stand on His Word, for His Word never fails (Isaiah 55:11).
  2. Pray with Boldness – Bring every obstacle before Him, for He hears and answers (Philippians 4:6–7).
  3. Walk in Faith, Not Sight – Obstacles may look big, but faith sees God as bigger (2 Corinthians 5:7).
  4. Give Thanks in Advance – Praise God before the breakthrough, because He is faithful (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
  5. Stay Focused on God, Not the Problem – Peter walked on water when his eyes were on Jesus, but sank when he looked at the waves (Matthew 14:29–30).

Our victory is not in our strength but in the One who is greater than all.

Conclusion

Beloved, the message is clear: God is bigger than the obstacles. Whether it is your weakness, the enemy’s schemes, difficult circumstances, fear, lack, or even death itself—God is greater.

Let us echo the words of John:

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” – 1 John 4:4

Do not be discouraged by what stands before you. Instead, lift your eyes to the One who reigns above all. The obstacles may be mighty, but our God is Almighty.
